Department Philosophy

The Social Studies Department is committed to introducing students to the social studies through the study of geography and civics.  In Grade 7 students will explore how geography affects the development of cultures and nations, and how human activity impacts the physical environment.  They explore the world in spatial terms by examining human settlement by places and region.  In Grade 8 students will explore civic participation and the development of government at the local, state and national level.  They will come to understand the principles and values of the American democracy as it is embodied in the United States Constitution, and in how the United States interacts with other nations.  Students will regularly engage in analysis of course content, primary and secondary sources, and different forms of media.  Through the study of content they will continuously refine their reading, writing, listening, speaking and communication skills.  The Social Studies Department curriculum infuses technological tools where appropriate in order to prepare students to responsibly use and create digital media.
