Health 7 Course Syllabus
7th Grade Health #9270
A variety of important topics are addressed in 7th grade health. A nutrition unit will teach students how to utilize the food pyramid and dietary guidelines, plan healthy meals, interpret food labels and avoid eating disorders. Units of HIV/AIDS and Lyme Disease will cover ways the diseases are contracted, symptoms, preventative measures and treatments. Instruction will be given on peer pressure, behavior risks, community health resources, environmental wellness, and the various systems of the body. A substance abuse unit will provide information on alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, inhalants, and over the counter drugs.
No tool(s), instrument(s) or equipment (compasses, knives, scissors, bats) used in the instructional process of this course may be removed from the classroom/lab/shop/gym without the express permission of the teacher in charge.
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES
Substance Abuse Education
1. Describe and demonstrate effective communication skills, decision-making, skills, negotiation skills, and assertiveness in situations that influence adolescence health and safety. (2.2.7)
2. Classify chemical substances by their actions on the body and describe the short and long term effects of their use. (2.3.6)
3. Discuss the laws pertaining to the use, sale, and possession of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. (2.3.11)
4. Motivate students to resist pressures to use drugs by helping them identify the social, psychological, and physical consequences of those substances.
5. Recognize the similarities between marijuana and alcohol.
6. Understand and identify pressures to use drugs.
7. Demonstrate ways of saying no and resisting peer pressure.
8. List alternative ways of resisting pressures.
Body Systems
9. Identify and discuss the functions and parts of the skeletal system.

17. Understand what HIV and AIDS are and how each effects the body.

19. Understand medical interventions and their effectiveness in treating AIDS.
20. Describe the incubation period.
21. Identify myths of HIV transmission.
22. Identify choices that will protect oneself from contracting HIV/AIDS.
Lyme Disease
23. Identity the germ that causes Lyme disease.
24. Understand how Lyme disease is transmitted.
25. Identify the types of ticks that may carry Lyme disease.
26. Recognize signs and symptoms of being infected with Lyme disease.
27. Identify chronic health issues associated with Lyme disease.
28. Understand diagnosis and treatment for Lyme disease.
29. List preventative measures to protect yourself from Lyme disease.
Nutrition
30. Identify the six major nutrients.
31. List the dietary guidelines to follow in planning a healthful diet.
32. Identify the nutrition pyramid .
33. Read and interpret nutrition fact labels.
34. Explain healthful food choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
35. Recognize healthful snacks.
36. Identify healthful attitudes towards weight management.
37. Explain the importance of nutrition and physical activity.
38. List the steps in the digestive process.
39. Explain how wastes are removed from the body.
40. Describe ways to care for your digestive system.
41. Examine health products, food labels, and advertisements, comparing accuracy, content, directions, and value. (2.1.13)
42. Analyze food choices from fast food restaurants, choosing lower fat alternatives.
43. Identify what are discretionary calories.
44. Compare and contrast the relationship of students' eating habits verses the guidelines of the pyramid.
