8TH GRADE ALTERNATIVE HEALTH #9250
An alternative course to Family Life Education is offered. Instruction includes the anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, cardiovascular disease, the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease, the nature of cancer, treatment methods, and prevention. The significance of our changing lifestyle, increased leisure time, and stress in relation to degenerative diseases is discussed. Violence causes, prevention and ways of protecting oneself will be taught. Substantial time will be devoted to substance abuse education. This unit will focus on types of drugs and their effects on the individual as well as his/her family. A major objective will be to teach drug refusal skills, based on knowledge of the effects and damages that can occur. Decision making, communication skills, stress management techniques, aging, and death and dying will also be units of learning in this class.
No tool(s), instrument(s) or equipment (compasses, knives, scissors, bats) used in the instructional process of this course may be removed from the classroom/lab/shop/gym without the express permission of the teacher in charge.

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course the students should be able to:
HEALTH AND WELLNESS:
1. Analyze how family, peers, culture, media, technology, and the environment affect wellness.
RESPONSIBLE DECISION MAKING SKILLS:
2. Explain how the setting of long term goals enhances responsible decision making.
3. Describe how goals are influenced by changes and behaviors that occur throughout life.
4. Analyze how health decisions and behaviors are influenced by family, peers, culture, and the media and develop strategies that support effective decision-making and safe behavior.
5. Identify three decision-making styles.
6. Describe and demonstrate effective communication skills, decision-making skills, refusal skills, negotiation skills, and assertiveness in situations that influence adolescent health and safety.
7. Identify and demonstrate health practices that support and enhance personal and family physical and mental health.
COMMUNICATION:
8. Recognize anger cues and signs of hidden anger.
9. Understand how to use anger management skills.
10. Discuss how nonverbal behavior and mixed messages affect communication.

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM AND CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE:

15. Identify and label the parts of the heart and circulatory system.
16. Identify the seven basic types of cardiovascular disease.
17. Describe the factors that are necessary to maintain a healthy circulatory system.
18. Describe ways to prevent Cardiovascular Disease
19. Identify foods that help reduce the risk of developing Cardiovascular Vascular Disease.
20. Identify foods that increase risk for Cardiovascular Vascular Disease.
21. Recognize the role of plaque in the development of atherosclerosis.
22. Recognize the symptoms of a heart attack.
23. Understand the meaning of an "infarction."
24. Understand the action of the heart during ventricular fibrillation.
25. Understand how an ECG, CPK and myoglobin are used to diagnose a recent heart attack.

30. Understand what cancer is and how cancer spreads throughout the body.
31. Discuss the various theories as to what causes cancer.
32. Understand the 7 warning signals of cancer. (CAUTION)
33. Recognize the basic symptoms of cancer in the most common sites of the body.
34. Differentiate between a carcinoma, sarcoma, lymphoma and leukemia.
35. Recognize the importance of early detection in the treatment of cancer.
36. Recognize the importance of self checks for early detection of cancer.
37. Understand the methods used for diagnosing cancer.
38. Understand the importance of cancer research.
39. Understand the various methods and options in the treatment of cancer.
VIOLENCE AND CONFLICT:
40. Analyze the causes of conflict and violent behavior in youth and adults.
41. Describe nonviolent strategies for individuals and groups to prevent and resolve conflict.
42. Discuss various types of violent behavior and be able to recognize signs and symptoms of violence.
43. List protective factors that help reduce the student's risk of violence.
44. Explain the steps in victim recovery.
DEATH AND DYING:
45. Explain how practicing healthful habits now will help you live longer later.
46. Discuss physical changes, mental conditions, and social needs of people as they age.
47. Describe the five stages of dying.
48. Understand how people express grief and ways to comfort someone who is grieving.
49. Identify the steps in the grieving process.
DRUG EDUCATION:
50. List reasons why people use/abuse drugs.
51. Explain ways drugs enter the body.
52. Classify chemical substances by their actions on the body, and describe that short and long term effects of their use.
53. Discuss the appropriate use of medicines, prescription and over the counter, and the dangers of drug interactions.
54. Describe the signs and progression of chemical use, abuse, and dependency throughout the life cycle.
55. Identify and explain how to access resources for information, support, and the treatment of problems related to the use and abuse of chemical substances.
56. Acquire resistance and refusal skills to Say No to pressures and influences concerning harmful drug use and abuse.
57. Discuss the laws pertaining to the use, sale, and possession of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
58. Identify the benefits of Saying No and adopting a drug free lifestyle.
59. Identify diseases directly associated with the use of chemical substances.
